    Priming intuition disfavors instrumental harm but not impartial beneficence

    Understanding the cognitive underpinnings of moral judgment is one of most pressing problems in psychological science. Some highly-cited studies suggest that reliance on intuition decreases utilitarian (expected welfare maximizing) judgments in sacrificial moral dilemmas in which one has to decide whether to instrumentally harm (IH) one person to save a greater number of people. However, recent work suggests that such dilemmas are limited in that they fail to capture the positive, defining core of utilitarianism: commitment to impartial beneficence (IB). Accordingly, a new two-dimensional model of utilitarian judgment has been proposed that distinguishes IH and IB components. The role of intuition on this new model has not been studied. Does relying on intuition disfavor utilitarian choices only along the dimension of instrumental harm or does it also do so along the dimension of impartial beneficence? To answer this question, we conducted three studies (total N = 970, two preregistered) using conceptual priming of intuition versus deliberation on moral judgments. Our evidence converges on an interaction effect, with intuition decreasing utilitarian judgments in IH—as suggested by previous work—but failing to do so in IB. These findings bolster the recently proposed two-dimensional model of utilitarian moral judgment, and point to new avenues for future research

    Evaluation of the IHS tribal management grant program.

    There were three principle objectives of this study: 1) determine if the Tribal Management Grant Program (TMGP) is meeting its goals and objectives as stated in The Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act and by the Indian Health Service (IHS) as stated in the TMGP guidelines; 2) identify problems and obstacles faced by the program; and 3) identify possible solutions to program problems. The report defines and prioritizes eligible projects to be funded under the TMGP. Collected data consisted of in-depth interviews with potential tribal management grantees, and IHS staff in IHS Headquarters and Area Offices representatives. It found that the TMGP is meeting its objective of improving the management capacity of tribes to enter into 638 health contracts. The report lists specific findings and provides recommendations including: 1) enhance the grant and contract information system; 2) modify the TMGP funding priority system; 3) improve communication/coordination among IHS Headquarters, Area Offices and TM Grantees; 4) automate the TM grantee tracking system; and 5) assist tribes in obtaining local sources of training and technical assistance.     Extraction of trapped light from luminescent solar concentration

    In modern light sources such as Luminescent Solar Concentrators (LSC's) and Light Emitting Diodes (LED's), light is emitted within a light-guiding structure of high refractive index. Some of this light is trapped and will not be able to escape. Similar problems are observed when collecting fluorescent radiation in waveguides (1) and scintillation detectors (2). For lighting applications, this trapped light should be ablet o escape the light-guiding structure. In LED's this is commonly achieved witha special profile in the active zone. However, inLSC's the small light-emitting zone is remote from the large light collector so a different approach must betaken. This paper will focus on the extraction of emitted light from rectangular LSc's and propose a way of extracting a large fraction of the trapped light

    Implementation of Quantum Gates via Optimal Control

    Starting with the basic control system model often employed in NMR pulse design, we derive more realistic control system models taking into account effects such as off-resonant excitation for systems with fixed inter-qubit coupling controlled by globally applied electromagnetic fields, as well as for systems controlled by a combination of a global fields and local control electrodes. For both models optimal control is used to find controls that implement a set of two- and three-qubit gates with fidelity greater than 99.99%. While in some cases the optimal pulses obtained appear to be surprisingly simple and experimentally realistic, the results also show that the "optimal" pulses obtained in other cases are experimentally infeasible, and more sophisticated parametrization of the control fields and numerical algorithms are needed.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    A constructive algorithm for the Cartan decomposition of SU(2^N)

    We present an explicit numerical method to obtain the Cartan-Khaneja-Glaser decomposition of a general element G of SU(2^N) in terms of its `Cartan' and `non-Cartan' components. This effectively factors G in terms of group elements that belong in SU(2^n) with n<N, a procedure that can be iterated down to n=2. We show that every step reduces to solving the zeros of a matrix polynomial, obtained by truncation of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula, numerically.     The Distant Horizon: investigating the relationship between social sciences academic research and game development

    Research in the social sciences devotes a great amount of attention to investigating the impact of video games on the individual and on society. However, results generated by this research often fail to inform game development. The present study investigated the outreach of research conducted by the academic community by interviewing 30 game developers and 14 researchers, highlighting critical aspects in the relationship between game research and game industry. Specifically, we found that the difference in priorities, speed cycles, and dissemination practices between these two contexts hinder communication. Subsequently, we carried out a focus group for a set of developers and researchers (N=6) with the aim of eliciting recommendation for improving communication between academics and developers. Among the recommendations to emerge were calls to diversify dissemination channels, promote joint conferences and develop research-production partnerships. It was felt such measures could strengthen the influence of research results outside the academic community
